What’s New to Stream on Hulu for May 2018

Here’s what’s coming to Hulu this month!

Hulu has been stuck in the third place position when it comes to movie streaming behind Netflix and Amazon Prime because most people still see them strictly as a home for next-day television. They have movies too, though, and more than a few of them are terrific gems that make Hulu a destination for more than just TV.

The complete list of new movies hitting Hulu this month — May 2018 — is below, but I wanted to highlight the best of the bunch along with several others worth seeking out.

Hulu Pick of the Month

Michael Mann’s career features more than a few highlights, but while everyone loves Heat (1995) and The Last of the Mohicans (1992) not enough people have seen his earliest film, Thief (1981). It’s the definition of oozing style, and Mann crafts a beautiful tale of an encroaching darkness complete with action, suspense, and captivating character drama. James Caan gives a terrific lead performance, but the surprise here is the memorable supporting turn by Jim Belushi.

The Crow

They Made Sequels to The Crow?

Yes, they did! 1994’s The Crow is something of an infamous supernatural thriller thanks to the untimely on-set death of its star Brandon Lee. Death is no obstacle, though, when it comes to movies about death and resurrection, and three sequels followed. Yeah, I haven’t seen any of them yet either, but that changes this month as The Crow: City of Angels (1996), The Crow: Salvation (2000), and The Crow: Wicked Prayer (2005) all come to Hulu.

Back To School

80s Comedies

A pair of very popular 80s comedies comes home this month too with Baby Boom (1987) and Back to School (1986). The former sees Diane Keaton as a successful businesswoman whose life takes a turn when a baby lands in her lap, and the latter takes a wholly different look at youth by sending Rodney Dangerfield back to college to finish what he started. Both were big hits, and both hold up, but only one features a cameo by Kurt Vonnegut.

Manhunter

Uh Oh… Serial Killers!

Can you believe I’m highlighting two Michael Mann movies in the same post? I’m such a stinker. Manhunter (1986) demands the respect, though, and deserves the attention for being an endlessly stylish take on Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon. Brian Cox’s Hannibal Lecktor is a terrifically unsettling performance, and Mann’s use of music and staging throughout is beautiful stuff. Kalifornia (1993) lacks that film’s cachet, but there’s twisted fun to be had watching David Duchovny and Michelle Forbes face off against a homicidal Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis.
