“LIGHT THE TRENCH!”

Particularly considering how Grey Worm was seen prepping the fire trenches last episode (when not busy discussing his retirement plans, which rarely bodes well for a character’s survival), the scene in which Daenerys fails to see the signal to light up the trenches due to the “Night King effect” snow felt a whole lot like the end for the Unsullied commander. Ultimately, Grey Worm lived to fight another day, but that was one tense scene—and the payoff of watching the trenches catch fire was just as epic as seeing the wights overcome the obstacle by making a wight bridge proved terrifying.

Lyanna Mormont Takes Down a Giant

Thelongnight Lyanna Opt

All things considered, the Battle for the Dawn proved less brutal in terms of major character deaths than many were expecting. Grey Worm, for example, discussed retirement plans and then proceeded to survive, which is unheard of. That said, the episode did have one truly shocking death up its sleeve with Lyanna Mormont. She went out like the badass we always knew she was, taking out an undead giant with a dragonglass dagger to the eye.
