All the Other Death Theories

Thrones Characters Podrick

It’s Game of Thrones, so there’s plenty of death to go around. Hell, maybe the Night King wins and everyone dies. It could happen! (it won’t) (probably).

Jon   [Probability: High]

There are a couple of reasons Jon isn’t going to ride into the sunset this season. Narratively speaking, there’s no way that Jon would be happy living in King’s Landing. He’d be miserable. He hates the south. And he’s not going to time-share a kid between Winterfell and King’s Landing. Jon’s probably going to cheese it. He’s operating on borrowed time anyway what with having been resurrected. And on that note, we’ve already reckoned with his death before. It’ll be less of a shock this time. We’re pretty sure he’ll sustain a mortal wound during his tussle with the Night King, fulfilling his purpose to the Lord of Light. Plus, Jon’s death might send Daenerys into a spiral, which would be fun, and put pressure on Tyrion and Varys to calm her down.

Melisandre   [Probability: High]

While she’s got an uneven track record as far as prophecies are concerned, she literally told us she’s going to return to Westeros one more time and die. And she’s on Arya’s list, which is not a good place to be if you want to live. Just ask Meryn Trant. Or Walder Frey.

Grey Worm   [Probability: High]

He’s probably going to die in battle. There’s been too much of a focus on him and a build up to a battle in the trailer for this not to happen.

Arya   [Probability: Low]

For some reason the internet really wants Arya to die in battle—or at least seems to be bringing it up a whole lot? We’d rather not lose her. Let the super badass trained assassin be a survivor, please?

Podrick [Probability: Medium]

He’s a lover, not a fighter. Based on the trailer, he’s at the frontlines for the battle against the dead. Also, he’s way too damn noble, so he’s probably going to save someone—maybe Brienne?—the same way he did Tyrion at the Battle of Blackwater, only he’s going to get himself killed in the process. It will be very sad. You’ll cry. We’ll cry. There’ll be some sort of comment about how he was the most loyal squire who ever lived. We’ll cry harder. It’ll be a time.

Jorah [Probability: High]

Jorah was literally made to sacrifice himself for Daenerys. Who knows, maybe he lets her stab him through the chest to temper Lightbringer. He’d probably love that.

Daenerys [Probability: Low]

She’s the closest thing the show has to a primary protagonist, so this is unlikely. But who knows. It’s Game of Thrones after all.

Bran [Probability: Medium]

Word on the internets is that when Bran turns the tide against the Army of the Dead by warging into Visieron, it kills him. While we’d say this would be unlikely because he has to return to the north to go hug a tree for eternity, it’s possible that his death is a part of a larger change towards a new magic-less era.

Varys [Probability: Medium]

We still need to hear all the deets about that voice he heard in the flames way back when, so he’s not going to be the first to go, but Melisandre did tell him he was gonna die in Westeros in a very ominous sort of way. Admittedly, she’s gotten her wires crossed before (see: Stannis), but she doesn’t usually lie. Now, she could have just been messing with him—it could be that he’s going to die in Westeros at the ripe old age of 102. Still. We’d be nervous.

Sansa  [Probability: Low]

What is there left for Sansa to do at this point? She’s definitely learned plenty of lessons along the way, but she’s still not a fighter, and the final season is looking pretty battle-heavy. Maybe she’ll just play a low-key role so that she can take over as Lady of Winterfell once the dust settles. Or maybe she’s running out of plotline.
