No more, Mr. Nice Guy. A plan is percolating inside. An anger is bubbling. A revenge is coming.
We see Arthur’s reflection in the TV screen. On the news, Thomas Wayne (Brett Cullen) struts proudly amongst an army of business suits. He is the wealth of Gotham personified, a capitalistic demon who thrives while the average citizen starves to death.
Clown-faced protesters stand in defiance against Wayne. “We are all clowns.” Gotham is a laughing stock and an absurd embarrassment for the rest of the world. What they need is a good ol’ fashioned French Revolution a la The Dark Knight Rises.
In their apartment elevator, Sophie Drummond (Zazie Beetz) resigns to the misery of the city, “It’s so awful, isn’t it?”
In response, Arthur cracks a smirk. Misery loves company. In her ache he finds comfort.
Earlier, he somehow manages to convince Sophie to witness his stand-up routine. She puts on a sympathetic smile. She’s here to support her friend whether he’s actually funny or not. We hear Arthur begin to speak to an unknown listener, “For my whole life…”
No matter what the crowd thinks, Arthur is just happy to be doing what he loves best in the world: telling jokes and using comedy to bring a little uplift to the forsaken.
Arthur stares at an artist’s rendition of a deadly new killer plaguing Gotham, a clown-faced vampire. “…I didn’t know if I even existed.”
