The next installment of the series will involve Kansas City, the mafia, and Chris Rock.
Chris Rock is set to lead the fourth season of Fargo. Noah Hawley, the creator of the FX series, caused quite a stir when he said he couldn’t foresee Season 4 happening. But he just meant it would take some time before he could step away from his other projects and dedicate his time entirely on the show. Fortunately, Hawley and producer Warren Littlefield are indeed now confirmed to be returning for another installment.
Unfortunately, we will still have to wait a while for Season 4, as it is not set to start filming until the fall of 2019 or possibly even early 2020. This is quite a gap between installments, given Season 3 aired in Spring 2017 and now Season 4 won’t arrive until three or four years later. Previously, the gaps between seasons have only been about 16 months.
FX president John Landgraf confirmed during this year’s Television Critics Association event (via Deadline) that Fargo Season 4 will take place in 1950 in Kansas City, Missouri. I know what you’re thinking, and yes, this season will probably be lacking in the classic Minnesota accents. But if you’ve been following the show, you’ll recall that Kansas City has figured into the plot before, most notably in Season 2.
Along with the location, the basics of the Season 4 plot were revealed. This time the show will focus on two relocated families, one of them immigrants originating from Italy and the other African Americans fleeing from the South during the time of Jim Crow laws, both of them settling in the same city and fighting for the American dream.
That’s literal fighting, with the sort of violence we can expect from the show. In Kansas City, the two families have become crime syndicates, and the series will deal with their striking of an uneasy peace. The head of the African-American crime family (Rock) is forced to trade in his eldest son (who we bet is the father of Bokeem Woodbine’s character from Season 2) to be raised by their Italian-American rivals, and vice versa.
The drama of Season 4 begins as the head of the Kansas City mafia goes into the hospital for routine surgery and winds up dead. The story is said to be, according to the official plot description, one of “immigration and assimilation, and the things we do for money. And as always, a story of basically decent people who are probably in over their heads. You know, Fargo.”
Even with Fargo being a dark comedy, Rock is stepping a bit out of his comfort zone for this role. Known for his stand-up career, his breakout stint as a regular on Saturday Night Live, and numerous comedy films and series, playing a crime boss in a drama series like Fargo is a little bit different from what fans know and love him best in.
However, Rock seems raring to go as he said in a statement, “I’m a fan of Fargo and I can’t wait to work with Noah.” Aside from Rock, no other cast members have been announced and there is no set release date.
