‘Gerald’s Game’ and ‘1922’ headline a packed first title wave announcement for Fantastic Fest 2017!
Regular readers of the site will know that our favorite time of year around these parts is the week between pre-Fantastic Fest and post-Fantastic Fest, an eight-day stretch we like to call… Fantastic Fest. 2017 is the fest’s thirteenth year, and it promises to continue the trend of growing bigger, better, and even more memorable.
The first wave announcement hit this week, and it’s filled with films we already know are great and several others we can’t wait to see. Titles we can recommend without reservation include the terrific Cambodian action picture Jailbreak, the tight German thriller Cold Hell, and the dark drama of My Friend Dahmer. The list of titles we’re anticipating is far longer starting with a pair of Stephen King premieres in Mike Flanagan’s Gerald’s Game and 1922 which sees the return of Thomas Jane into the King universe. Also high on the list are Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, S. Craig Zahler’s Brawl in Cell Block 99, and the world premiere of a zombie musical from Scotland called Anna and the Apocalypse.
There’s already plenty to be excited about here, and there are still two more title waves to come before the festival opens September 21st. Keep reading to see the entire list of films included in this first announcement!

Director – Zak Hilditch
1922 is based on Stephen King’s 131-page story telling of a man’s confession of his wife’s murder. The tale is told from from the perspective of Wilfred James, the story’s unreliable narrator who admits to killing his wife, Arlette, in Nebraska. But after he buries her body, he finds himself terrorized by rats and, as his life begins to unravel, he becomes convinced his wife is haunting him.
