With Donald Glover dipping his hands in so many pots lately, we try to sort out all his future projects.
So the 33-year-old writer, producer, comedian, and singer-songwriter has revealed he wants to eventually add directing movies to the list.
“Absolutely,” Donald Glover said when asked if he could see himself eventually directing a feature, “I think it’d be fun. I just have to have the right idea. I think directing is like everything else; if you’re storytelling, then you have to be really confident in what you’re telling.”
It’s safe to say there are no complaints on my end for this endeavor, but the main question is, when’s he going to find the time? Here’s everything we know about the future of Donald Glover:
Movies
Glover is set to star as young Lando Calrissian in the untitled Han Solo Star Wars flick premiering in 2018, is voicing the part of Simba in Disney’s 2019 live-action Lion King remake, and as of now possesses a mysterious role (rumored to be a certain villain) in this summer’s Spiderman: Homecoming.
So far, trailers for Spider-Man: Homecoming have teased quick snippets of Glover, never completely revealing who he could possibly be. Homecoming isn’t Glover’s first time being associated with Spiderman; it has been the desire of many fans to have him portray Miles Morales, the black hispanic version of Spider -Man, on screen in either a series or a movie (he voiced the character for two episodes of the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man before the part was recast). So although that idea never came about, it’s nice to know we’re close.
Television
Yeah, we’re still eventually going to get Season 2 of Atlanta.
The return of the breakout FX comedy series’ won’t happen until sometime in 2018 due to Glover’s production schedule, which is unfortunate for a number of reasons. The show, which is about two cousins pursuing the Atlanta rap scene, touches down on social topics such as homosexuality, police brutality, and race in a comedic light while featuring beautiful cinematography and even better dialogue. Glover, who created the series, stars as one of the cousins, and writes and directs some of the episodes, won the Golden Globe and the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series and was nominated for WGA and DGA Awards.
Glover and his brother Stephen, who is a writer and producer on Atlanta, now have a deal to develop more series for FX. The first to be announced is an animated Deadpool series based on the Marvel character. The 10- episode FXX series will debut in 2018 with the brothers serving as showrunners.
Music
Besides the movie and TV gigs on his plate, Glover is also doing a concert with Dave Chappelle in New York City this summer under his rapper name, Childish Gambino. Ticketmaster’s listing markets it as “Dave Chappelle & Childish Gambino: Live From Radio City,” and it’s happening one night only, on August 19th (however, Chappelle is doing nine more shows at Radio City Music Hall with different guests each night). As is often the case at comedy shows, cell phones will be prohibited, we can’t expect any recordings of the event.
Glover recently revealed he’s actually going to ditch the “Childish Gambino” persona after his next album. Once again remaining in a frame of cinematic mind, he related the final record to a film franchise: “There’s nothing worse than, like, a third sequel, like a third movie and we’re like, ‘Again?’ I like it when something’s good, and when it comes back there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that.”
To be honest, the name doesn’t seem to fit the mature, savvy icon Glover is turning into, and after recently becoming a father himself, it just doesn’t feel right calling him Childish Gambino anymore.
The fact of the matter is, whatever name he’s going by, a large following is guaranteed, because Glover pretty much turns everything he touches to gold.
