Do We Really Need Fewer Sequels in ’08?

It looks like 2008 may be the year when Hollywood finally gives audiences what they’ve been asking for: fewer sequels.

It looks like 2008 may be the year when Hollywood finally gives audiences what they’ve been asking for: fewer sequels.

USA Today is reporting that the number of sequel releases will be far below average this year. If the news seems oddly hollow, it should. Audiences groan when their beloved characters are placed into new situations, but sequels put up huge box office numbers last year.

So this may be like the year you begged your mom and dad for a bike, and there it was on Christmas morning – shiny and brilliant. You screamed for joy, took it outside to wear the tires in and were promptly hit by a bus.

Violent similes aside, having fewer sequels may prove to be a grand move in the right direction for the art of film or may give movie-goers a bad case of buyer’s remorse. Luckily, we’ll still have Rambo XXIII to tide us over during the drought.

Talking Point: Are you happy to see less sequels being made in 2008 than in previous years?
