Collaborator of Kubrick, multiple Coppolas, Wes Anderson and more.

I’m going to throw out a list of films: A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, Midnight Express, The Shining, Chariots of Fire, The Cotton Club, Out of Africa, Tucker: A Man and His Dream, Dick Tracy, Death and the Maiden, Titus, Bulworth, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Marie Antoinette, The Darjeeling Limited, Carnage, The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Now I’m going to ask you to identify the connection between these films. Obviously they’re all excellent films, and you’ve got multiple entries from Stanley Kubrick, Wes Anderson, Roman Polanski, Francis Ford Coppola, and Warren Beatty, all Oscar-winning filmmakers, but there’s another thread running through these films, and it’s kind of a literal one.

The above list is a selected filmography of four-time Oscar-winning Costume Designer Milena Canonero, who started her career with Kubrick and A Clockwork Orange and has been a vital collaborator of no less than three generations of outstanding directors. In the following video from Fandor, the career of Canonero is given the spotlight it deserves, with special attention to her techniques and trademark style.

You know the work and you know its impact, on both fashion and film. Now it’s time you get to know the remarkable woman behind it all.
