Cold, Hard, Clear: Denis Villeneuve Through Glass

By  · Published on October 5th, 2017

The director’s aesthetic inclinations are quite transparent.

Blade Runner 2049 won’t be director Denis Villeneuve’s first visually stunning film. The French Canadian won countless awards for Arrival, Sicario, and Prisoners, but even his early work had the crisp detachment that makes those films so striking.

Oddly enough, something linking these through their cinematography is shots through glass. Windshields, windows, rearview mirrors – things exist in Villeneuve’s worlds through a pane of removal.

Below you can find a supercut of all Villeneuve’s glass-oriented shots complete with all their creepiness. Mikolaj Kacprzak’s new video may lack Blade Runner 2049, but its potency isn’t stymied at all.
