The ‘Masters of Sex’ star has joined one of the most anticipated superhero projects.

A project that has long seemed dead in the water is finally gaining some traction: according to VarietyMasters of Sex star Lizzy Caplan will be joining X-Men offshoot Gambit. While there aren’t many details about Caplan’s character yet, it is confirmed that she will play the female lead in Gore Verbinski’s film, which is set for a February 14th, 2019 release.

Gambit is another one of those X-Men spinoffs that Fox currently has in development. Recently, we reported that a movie based on Multiple Man is being put together, although Gambit has been in production for a lot longer. The film will revolve around Channing Tatum’s Gambit, an X-Men character who has appeared briefly in movies such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where he was played by Taylor Kitsch. His powers include the ability to turn playing cards into weapons by manipulating kinetic energy to his desire. Tatum has been attached for quite a long time now, but with this news, it looks like the movie will finally become a reality.

While Variety has no information about what character Lizzy Caplan will play, it would be easy to imagine her playing the part of Rogue. This character, who was last played by Anna Paquin, was cut from X-Men: Days of Future Past, so it has been some time since we’ve seen her onscreen. Rogue has traditionally played an on-again, off-again love interest for Gambit, and that would be a great way to reintroduce the character into the X-Men universe.

There is also the possibility of Caplan being cast as Bella Donna Boudreaux, who was originally going to be played by Lea Seydoux. It doesn’t seem as if Seydoux is still attached to the film anymore, though, so this could be Caplan’s character. While Bella Donna isn’t vital to much else in the X-Men universe, she is a crucial part of Gambit’s origin story: according to EW, Bella Donna and Gambit were connected in New Orleans when they were younger and were engaged to be married at one point before that was tragically put on hold. If this is the story the filmmakers choose to adapt, Gambit could well be something like a superhero Romeo & Juliet.

We’ll have more on Gambit as it comes.
