HBO’s Emmy-winning series won’t be limited for long.

What a difference a day makes. Recently there were concerns that Big Little Lies season 2 would ever happen, given Reese Witherspoon’s other commitments. I assume a big paycheck and Emmys make getting the team back together a lot more enticing. TVLine reports that HBO is eyeing a Spring 2018 production start for the critically acclaimed drama.

Big Little Lies executive producer David E. Kelly told TVLine two weeks ago that, “We’re kicking around ideas and trying to lasso the talent [and] get the band back together. It’s just a lot of logistical things. But I’m optimistic because everyone wants to do it. We feel we still have storytelling to do. No decision has been made yet, but we’re hopeful. Where we left it, I felt like it did open the opportunity for a lot more storytelling.” While HBO is staying mum on the potential filming of season 2, it would seem that it is only a matter of time in this instance.

Now the bigger issue is exactly what season 2 might entail. The events of season 1 mostly tie up the odds and ends of Liane Moriarty’s hit novel. According to Laura Dern at the Emmys, it was whether or not Moriarty would be willing to come up with another story. That would mean that whatever material the new season would originate from would not be the text of the original novel. All the pieces seem to be coming together for the possibility of season 2 as well since Jean-Marc Vallée wants to make the sequel.  “It’d be great to reunite the team and to do it,” Vallée said backstage at the Emmys. “Are we going to be able to do it, altogether? I wish. We’ll see.”

Also making room for a return to the series is Reese Witherspoon. We reported recently that she had a new series picked up by Apple about Morning Show personalities. With that news, it was expected that she would be too busy to entertain returning to Big Little Lies. Then came a new update that Witherspoon was exiting Noah Hawley’s Fox Searchlight film Pale Blue Dot, to make room on her schedule for the demands of Big Little Lies. Expect to hear news from HBO soon on the return of Big Little Lies, it is all coming together quickly.
