Benedict Cumberbatch Will Grow a Great Big Moustache and Mysteriously Disappear in ‘Lost City of Z’

Benedict Cumberbatch may not be in the next Star Wars film (at least, not according to his spokesperson), but apparently he’s still intent on starring in every other movie being released until the end of time. And it seems like 2014 will be the year of Cumberbatch biopics: he’s already slated to star as WWII codebreaker Alan Turing in The Imitation Game and rumored for a role in Flying Horse, about photographer Edweard Muybridge.

He’ll be breaking ciphers and snapping photos (although the role he’s rumored for is actually the guy who slept with Muybridge’s wife), and now he’ll be trekking through the jungle. Deadline reports that the newest biopic to star Cumberbatch will be Lost City of Z. Based on the similarly-titled book by David Grann, Lost City of Z sees Cumberbatch as Percy Fawcett, the British explorer who in 1925 journeyed through the Amazon in search of a fabled lost city and was never seen again. Deadline speaks of poison darts and snakes, but as of yet it’s unclear whether Lost City of Z will host that kind of sweeping, Indiana Jones-style adventure, or if it’ll be more of a brooding period piece where poison darts and venomous snakes occasionally make very somber appearances.

The film will be both written and directed by James Gray, best known for the Joaquin Phoenix-starring Two Lovers and We Own the Night.
