Get ready for a reimagining of old school #squadgoals.

A different Anne of Green Gables.

It’s been over one hundred years since we collectively fell in love with the eccentric, redheaded orphan from Prince Edward Island in Anne Shirley. Published in 1908, Lucy Maude Montgomery’s classic novel and subsequent series Anne of Green Gables was and is beloved by readers all over the world. Luckily for us, Anne is back in an upcoming miniseries from Netflix and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).

The miniseries, titled simply Anne, will air in Canada on CBC. The rest of us, in the United States and abroad, will get to enjoy the seven-part series on Netflix. The production team, who will begin work on the series in Ontario next month, is largely female, something that seems perfectly fitting for Anne’s story. The miniseries was written by Moira Walley-Beckett of Breaking Bad, produced by Miranda de Pencier of Beginners, and directed by Niki Caro of Whale Rider.

The story of the thirteen-year-old orphan mistakenly adopted by the elderly Cuthbert siblings is one that has captivated audiences of all ages. The first film adaptation of the novel was released in 1919. The most recent on-screen adaptation, an animated series, aired on PBS in 2000.

Writer Walley-Beckett best highlighted the continued relevance of Anne’s story saying: “Anne’s issues are contemporary: feminism, prejudice, bullying, and the desire to belong.” I hope that as a result of this miniseries, a whole new generation of girls will find a kindred spirit in Anne.

Anne will air on CBC and Netflix in 2017.
