Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey to Star in Noir Thriller ‘Serenity’

The two Interstellar castmates will reunite, this time on Earth.

Two days ago, Deadline reported that Steven Knight’s new film, Serenity, will be up for sale at the European Film Market in Berlin next month. The more exciting news is that the film will feature two of Hollywood’s brightest stars: Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey.

Steven Knight is also a prominent voice in Hollywood, having written the screenplays for Dirty Pretty Things (2002 – for which he was nominated for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar), Eastern Promises (2007), The Hundred Foot Journey (2014), and last year’s Allied. He also directed the Tom Hardy thriller Locke, and the 2013 British thriller Hummingbird. He has been working in Hollywood for a long time, but this will be his first time directing a film featuring such big stars.

Deadline reports that the film is about a fishing boat captain whose past comes back to haunt him when he finds himself on a small island in the Caribbean, seemingly in a new and mysterious reality. This is an interesting, if vague, description, and it could even hint at some supernatural elements. It has also been reported that multiple US film studios have expressed interest in the film. If everything goes as planned, shooting will begin in the summer. The project is set to be produced by Greg Shapiro (The Hurt Locker) and Guy Heeley (London Spy).

This will not be the first time Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey have found themselves in an esoteric film together before – they last teamed up in 2014 for Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic Interstellar. Interstellar found the two traveling through a wormhole to a distant ocean planet, in order to retrieve information collected by previous explorers. That film contained a number of complexities: in terms of plot, visual effects, narrative, and the emotions of the characters, which the actors pulled off brilliantly. Serenity seems like an equally mysterious project, although this time, the two stars will find themselves isolated on a small island on Earth, rather than in deep space.

Matthew McConaughey is currently starring in Gold and Sing, and will appear in The Dark Tower with Idris Elba later this year. Anne Hathaway’s recent performances include The White Queen in Alice Through the Looking Glass, Gloria in the upcoming Colossal, and Daphne Kluger in Ocean’s Eight, which will be released in 2018. Serenity is a promising project for both actors as well as Steven Knight, and is very likely to be picked up next month at the European Film Market.
