Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Teaming Up for Mystery Project That Sadly Doesn’t Involve Solving Mysteries

In 2005, the world as we knew it was a much different, much simpler place. Brad Pitt was still married to that cute girl from Friends, Jennifer Aniston, and she wasn’t painted as a sad, baby-less spinster in every tabloid that was having a slow news day. Angelina Jolie was still a successful actress best known for making out on the red carpet, wearing a vial of Billy Bob Thornton’s blood around her neck, adopting children on her own and completing humanitarian aid work around the world. All peachy, right guys? But when Pitt and Jolie co-starred in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the spy movie that was more about the super attractive leads sucking face while being pretty together than it was a traditional thriller, universes collided and Hollywood – nay, Earth – was never the same again.
Just a few months after the film’s premiere, Pitt and Aniston got divorced. He famously became involved with Jolie soon after, and they now have six children and successful careers to rest on. (Don’t worry; Aniston’s doing just fine for herself, too.) Although they’ve kept busy with ample projects, Pitt and Jolie have never worked together again since their infamous turn in Smith. But that’s about to change, with The Hollywood Reporter signaling that the couple is working on a “mystery project,” likely based on a script that Jolie wrote several years ago.
There are few details known at this point, and there is scarcely anybody on board besides Pitt and Jolie, but the overarching plot points are available. Jolie’s story is a relationship drama that follows a couple with serious issues (the best kind) who decide to take a vacation together as a “last-ditch effort” in order to save their relationship. It’s understood, naturally, that Pitt and Jolie would play the warring man and woman in question. A real-life, uber famous couple playing out a volatile and dramatic failing relationship onscreen, ripped from a script that one half of the couple penned herself? Audiences are going to eat this up without a second thought.
The mystery project doesn’t have a director lined up at the moment, but there’s a chance that Jolie could be pulling triple duty and stepping behind the camera, too. She made her writing and directing debut with 2011’s In the Land of Blood and Honey, the Bosnian war movie that intermixed a controversial love story in the middle and received subsequent mixed reviews. Currently, she’s working on directing the Coen brothers’ Unbroken, a WWII drama.
With so many details still up in the air about the new project, it’s unclear when Pitt and Jolie’s film will come into fruition. But it’s been nearly a decade since they teamed up to attempt each other’s assassinations and brood onscreen in Smith. Clock is ticking, kids.
