The story of a man whose heart was many times bigger than his mammoth frame.

There have been a few wrestlers who have made the transition from famous fighter to popular personality: Hulk Hogan, Dwayne Johnson, John Cena, and Dave Bautista are probably the most well-known of those who have accomplished this feat. For “the 8th wonder of the world”, though, André the Giant‘s personality was even bigger than he was, and now, a new HBO documentary that looks at the career and life of one of the greatest wrestlers the world has ever seen is set to hit our screens early next year.

André the Giant will tell the story of André Roussimoff, a superstar whose reach extended far beyond the ring. André was perhaps most notable to some people for his part in The Princess Bride, but that performance only portrayed a fragment of his talent. One of his most famous wrestling matches, Wrestlemania III with Hulk Hogan, will certainly be a major point of the documentary. That even signified the moment when wrestling transitioned from being about the Giant to being about Hulkamania.

Here’s the official synopsis and release details for the doc:

André the Giant, a new documentary that examines the life and career of one of wrestling’s most beloved characters, premieres Spring 2018. The film is produced by HBO Sports, WWE, and the Bill Simmons Media Group.

WWE has a history of painting a particular picture of their past superstars that glosses over many difficulties or sour moments from the wrestlers’ past. There are certain wrestlers (Chris Benoit, for instance) that have been entirely erased from the history of the company. There are likely plenty of other on-air events that have been removed from subsequent releases of a wrestlers history, so that could give some pause into exactly how this will turn out. If done correctly, though, this documentary could really be a phenomenal look into one of the figures who defined what sports entertainment would come to be.
