Hancock was a big summer hit for Will Smith and director Peter Berg in the summer of 2008, but it had a lot of detractors. Much of the criticism was unwarranted except for the comments directed at the film’s absolutely terrible third act. Goddamn that was disappointing.
Berg recently spoke with SciFiWire about possible plans for a sequel, and as a word of WARNING, his comment (and the remainder of this post) is SPOILER-filled…
“There might be another god out there,” Berg says with a typically Bergian smirk.
Ugh. And that ugh comes from a defender of the film (except for that atrocious and god-filled last act). The revelation that not only was Smith’s character a god but that one of his co-stars was as well was lame sauce of the highest order. And the movie explicitly stated that they were the last two of their kind too… so now there’s a third one? And aren’t they supposed to come in pairs? Berg also says that Jason Bateman’s subplot of him starting a charity campaign would also continue. Fascinating stuff.
If Hancock’s third-act twist didn’t suck so hard I’d be all for this sequel, but as it stands I have zero interest in seeing the story continue. There’s nowhere interesting to go here… is there?
